Instagram is rolling out a new update on July 10th 2025, that is certain to give new life to the value of Instagram content. Photos from posts, videos from Reels, and carousels from public professional accounts will be indexed by Google and potentially appear in search results alongside traditional web content.

You may have already seen a notification on your business account: “Your public photos and videos may soon appear in search engine results. From 10th July 2025, search engines will automatically be allowed to show all photos and videos on result pages.”

This applies to:

  • Public businesses and creators.
  • Users over the age of 18.
  • Posts published with search engine indexing enabled.

This does not apply to:

  • Personal or private accounts.
  • Users under 18 years of age.
  • Accounts that opt out in settings.

How you can benefit

Your public Instagram content now has the potential to show up in Google searches. In the same way brands ensure they upload regular blog content to their website, this new update gives you another opportunity to get some additional exposure.

Your brand could benefit from:

  • Local search discoverability.
  • Increased reach.
  • Extended shelf life for your content.

What to do

  • Go to ‘Settings and Activity’ on Instagram
  • Tap ‘Account Privacy’
  • Then you should see the option to toggle ON or OFF the section titled ‘Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results’.

Optimising Instagram for SEO

  • Include strategic keywords in captions.
  • Add alt text to your images.
  • Name your image files descriptively.
  • Use relevant hashtags.
  • The more niche you can be, the more relevant you can be in search results.

The lifespan of your content has increased dramatically with this update. But that does mean you need to think even more carefully about the visuals you share, the message or action behind them, and the audience you’re targeting.
